Storyline: In this interplanetary adventure, a space shuttle embarks on the first mission to colonize Mars, only to discover after takeoff that one of the astronauts is pregnant. Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet - never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot - an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he's never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, he's eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars - from the most simple to the extraordinary. But once his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner's organs can't withstand Earth's atmosphere. Eager to find his father, Gardner escapes the team...

Not your typical teen love story
After watching this movie, I am surprised it hasn't gotten a much higher rating. Normally, I would not be inclined to watch a teen love story movie; however the sci fi lover in me was attracted to the synopsis. I was not disappointed! It combines science fiction with a love story that is so sweet and tender. If this movie doesn't stir your heart, I wonder if it is still beating. It was a little predictable (I won't spoil it for you) but even still, I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Have you ever watched a baby or child enjoy their first rain, or any first experience? and did you feel the joy as you watched another human being feel joy and wonder from something we normally take for granted? Well this film has those moments, in addition to moments of true joyful love. Don't listen to the negative reviews and give it a try.
Fits for ages 12-15
I went to see the movie as an accompanying adult with my little sister and her friends, who are all 13. The plot seemed promising at first. A kid born on Mars, that's a cool take on Martians, right?. That was not the case. About 30 minutes into the film, I started twitching in my seat, about how little sense it all made. Got worse the more it went on. In my opinion, it was a mediocre story built around a great initial idea. I can't rant without spoiling, so I'll just say that the love story is weak and develops too fast. The kids are supposed to be 16 in the film, yet the 22+ looking Britt Robertson makes Asa Butterfield look more 14 than 16. In my opinion, it's unrealistic and pointless to see unless you are into a super super easy watch and won't get disturbed by stuff like 3 inch thick see-through laptops 16 years into the future; 16-year-olds crashing a plane into a building and jumping off on the last minute before a great explosion like Bruce Willis in Die Hard; half the movie being 16-year-olds making out and stealing cars; and of course a super predictable ending.
Not that bad
Okay, I'm old school dude. Like Golden Age of Science Fiction old. Maybe I'm too tolerant. But I'm not the only one! There is a lot of slamming going on here. The truth is this isn't a bad movie. If you want to be cynical then go right ahead and not enjoy yourself. This isn't science fiction. It's fantasy. Most of the gripes I read are legit. There are plenty of things that aren't scientifically correct. The plot is a new twist on an ancient concept. It's a STORY. I like the movie because it was fun to watch. Entertaining. And for a change, not a shot was fired except for rockets. So cut it a little slack and go in and be entertained.
This whole film is just a gigantic plot hole.
Is there anything more infuriating than people who know nothing about science trying to make a film/write a book about science? It seems like they didn't have a single person on board who knew anything about ANYTHING. I'm not even a scientist and I could have come up with a dozen ways to work around all these "issues" that were driving the story onward.

This film is a plot hole after another plot hole, the most infuriating part being that the whole story didn't need to happen.

!!!!!Here come the spoilers!!!!!!:

1. There's no way the mother would have passed the health checks while being pregnant. They're pretty thorough. Not only that, she appeared to be a good 5+ months pregnant when the mission started - absolutely no way in hell no one would have realised (even discounting the vigorous health checks).

2. WTF did they feed the newborn baby? The mother died, and I presume no one thought to pack baby formula for the astronauts to drink.

3. They could have brought the child back when the mission was due to return. First of all, 2/3 gravity isn't a big enough difference to even on its own to cause irreparable damage. I'm certain they could have helped get his body used to a higher gravity by exercising him and making him wear weights or something. Even without all that, they could have simply helped his body and his heart adjust to Earth's high gravity by for example putting him in a freaking water tank, idk. There are ways.

4. He (Gardner) has instantaneous communication with earth, and access to the internet (and presumably everything it has to offer), he's apparently a genius, and he was indeed raised among humans - even if they were only "scientists", rather than "loving parents" who would teach him all about life - yet somehow half the time he's acting like a socially retarded 5-year-old who has never seen even a picture of horse?! Uh-huh. This whole person-from-a-different-time-or-space-is- overwhelmed-by-the-present thing has been done a million times before; it's an old joke, and this time they failed massively.

5. Even though he's now old he could have still done the physical therapy I mentioned earlier. Better late than never!

6. I love how in the beginning of the film they make a point to mention that Earth's resources are pretty much depleted and all that jazz, but then 16 years later they can afford to send a rocket to space just to send a Martian and his father back home. You know how many resources it takes to build a rocket and fuel it? Even if the rocket was part of a mission that was already going there (conveniently leaving so soon after Gardner nearly died), those seats are valuable, and there are no spares.

Alas, that's not even all of it, but those are the biggest, most glaring plot holes that drove me nuts due to the fact that they rendered the whole film pointless.

And all this is ignoring the generally poor story line, shallow character design, crappy writing, and mediocre acting. Ugh.
Watch it yourself.
Do not get confused by some comments. This is a very nice story. Well played. Despite all the space theme is very down to earth and emotional in the right sense. I remember about a week or two ago reading very bad review on this very site. After that probably most people will turn away from this movie. Don't. It was I think some poor, lonely woman with loads of anger and just needed to sill it out. IMDb should read before posting reviews as they sometimes very misleading.
Its OK
Quite a number of the reviews I read prior to seeing this suggest it's more of a teen movie, I can certainly understand why they would be saying that, the relationship elements, the social engagement 'online' elements, but, there are some elements of this that seem woefully bizarre to me...

Bitt, how old is she, about 28 right, at what point in her career will she stop playing a teenager? I mean wow, lucky her she is nearly 30 and still looks like she is 16, but, it also starts to seem just a little bit creepy.

Speaking of creepy, the old Gary Oldman who freely admits he can't do accents, is even more creepy in this film when one of the plot points is revealed, I won't say what it is precisely but it certainly adds to the age related creepy factor in this movie.

Finally, Asa, I like him and see him having much potential, but like Britt he looks like a teenager (he's about to turn 20 according to IMDb), which in the context of his film does sort of work, but paired up with Britt, it's just creepy, and in relation to the aforementioned plot point, how old was Gary Oldman when that happened... it's all very Donald Trump age inappropriate creepy.

Anyways, all that aside, the film wasn't too bad, the premise worked well enough, the acting and special effects were generally pretty good. I didn't find myself picking up my phone to distract myself which these days seems to be my measure of acceptable/good movie, turning the movie off is the measure of a bad movie obviously.

Its entertaining enough, and in places you find yourself wanting a particular outcome to happen, even if at times you also want to slap the characters into sense.

Overall its not a bad movie, the creepy weird age stuff aside. I am just hoping Asa gets more opportunities in the future to play different roles, similarly it would be lovely to see Britt play a grown woman for a change, and Gary, please stop doing accents and interfering with woman who are a quarter of your age you old perv *grin*
Just awful and ridiculous
Don't waste your time on this awful movie.Where do I begin, the acting is the most terrible thing in this movie, even though there are great actors/actresses involved in it. I think it's mostly due to the terrible director. There are scenes where you see things imagined in the future that don't make any sense. When I saw it I said the director must be really old and doesn't know anything about technology and all. And I was right, he's too old school to have a realistic vision of the future.

I would say that during the making the whole team was too lazy to try to perfect the scenes, this is the only explanation that I could come up with. By the way, the whole story isn't that interesting. It's like someone said to himself "what if someone was born on Mars? let's make a movie about it" I mean, how the heck did a pregnant woman get into a spaceship in the first place??!!. These are not the places where people get to make such mistakes. The crew must have gone through a thorough examination prior to their trip. Especially, right before they leave. And yeah, the boy had to be so stubborn, even though he never been in touch with other children, he only lived with old scientists. How did he get this childish attitude? genetics?

There are things that just ridiculous like transparent laptops that allow any stranger to peek into what the user is doing!! and they are huge, like why would a student carry a glass made, transparent laptop to school when you have Ultrabooks that are smaller, lighter, and give you more privacy. Just like I said, the director is too old to imagine such things, and the whole crew is too lazy to point out the issue to the director, they just want to get paid regardless of the final outcome.

I honestly couldn't go through the first hour of the movie, it's ridiculous.
Beautiful, incredible story!
This is a very original story and is very well presented in the movie. DO NOT listen to negative reviews! I saw the low ratings but watched it anyway because I was intrigued by the idea of the plot and I am glad I watched it!! You will see from the very start that it's an enjoyable film. It is very easy to watch, very entertaining, and actually pretty unpredictable. I loved where it went and actually teared up a bit by the end. Didn't expect at all to be moved, considering all the negative reviews, right? But the movie should be taken as a young adult film, not some scientific heavy loaded epic that some critics were expecting. I loved the scenery, the colors, the CGI was amazing, the acting was on top, the plot was original and interesting. Too bad it got bad reviews because the sequel would have been great too. There is much left to continue the story. Great film! I absolutely recommend it!
A real Martian connects with a girl in Colorado.
My wife and I enjoyed this movie, we watched it at home on BluRay from our public library.

Set in the very near future an entrepreneur and his company (think Elon Musk and SpaceX) have established a colony on Mars, they name it "East Texas". In addition to all the other goings on a baby is born to one of the crew members, a human baby but also a real Martian because of the location of his birth. Sadly his mother dies during childbirth and, afraid to the negative publicity, it is all kept quiet back on Earth. The boy is raised in secret.

Forward 16 years and we meet the boy, Asa Butterfield as Gardner, now very bright teenager with a boring life. But he has met a girl online, he tells her he is in Manhattan. She is a teenager, a student in Colorado, Britt Robertson as Tulsa. They form quite a close friendship via Skype or some similar communications technology.

Gardner wants to travel to Earth but scientists and doctors are worried that his development in the weak gravity of Mars has made his bones and internal organs unsuitable for Earth, but they allow him to try anyway.

So that is the story, Gardner wanting to see Earth, meet Tulsa, and find his dad, while dealing with the inevitable medical issues. This is a very pleasant and entertaining movie. Gary Oldman is good as the head of the company, Nathaniel Shepherd. And as always, Carla Gugino, one of my very favorites, is good as Kendra Wyndham who mostly raised Gardner on Mars and is the closest thing he has to a mother.

SPOILERS follow: The lady who was to become Gardner's mom was one of the astronauts, the captain of this mission, but she unfortunately became pregnant right before leaving on the several month journey to Mars. Unable to turn back she had the child on Mars but she died in the aftermath of childbirth. Gardner had a photo of her and a man, he assumed was his dad, upon tracking him down in California finds out he is his uncle instead. We finally learn that Nathaniel Shepherd is his dad. Gardner's medical issues force him to return to Mars but Tulsa trains so that she can travel there too. As does Nathaniel.
Teen Love Story
Hoped for a good SF but got a teen love story. I give it a grade of a C for the plot line. Then I gave it a B for music and another B for scenery. It is a decent watch if you are into teen movie genre. I found it an OK view sort of an if you want to do something else while you watch sort of flick. Red box rental for me and as we know, the "Box" is always hit and miss. If you are not into teen-flicks check out the other new releases first.
