Super NYC Immgrant Tale recalling Scorsese
Extremely deft rendering of current immigrant experience (South Asian) in the NYC underbelly recalling not only Scorsese but even Scott B and Beth B by a young filmmaker who will go far. Accolades from the LA Times are highly justified pointing to the multinational, multi-everything, cast who gel almost as an ensemble. The perspective of a NYC taxi driver working the night shift is iconic and the immigrant's outer-borough reality in high relief. The Manhattan sophisticates at Cinema Village East were floored when one beautiful shady character, brilliantly realized by Galla Borowski, burst into Russian in the cab. One sensed creator Bari Kang was playing himself though having turned his life around. Hard-hitting, violent, mournful and haunting. Representations of miserable struggles, drugs and desperation, hearkening to years when Gotham was totally out of control, a time forgotten by many comfortable New Yorkers.
Original Thought And Captivating Movie
It's refreshing to watch an original movie with new talent and twists to keep the audience engaged. The casting was done very well and the chemistry between the actors was seamless. The dark humor was unlike anything I've seen and gave way to see dimensions to the characters. We are looking forward to seeing a sequel or two of Lucky.
Modern day take on Mean Streets
Lucky is a relatable character in modern day urban NYC. The opening was strong and even though Lucky is a criminal, you feel for him. The story starts to slow down about 15 minutes into it and then we meet Fernando and the pacing picks up and Lucky is now on a new path, one which I enjoyed watching unfold. There are enough twists that keep you engaged even though you might have guessed how things are going to turn out. However, the filmmaker surprised me with the ending. If you are used to happy ending mind numbing action then this may not be for you. For a slice of life gritty story give Lucky a shot.
Fun ride through the underbelly of NYC
I saw LUCKY a couple days ago and it sticks with me. It is a fun ride through the under belly of New York City. The film does a great job of capturing an immigrant's struggle for the American dream without falling into the trap of boring the audience with a political lecture about immigration and race. Set in the gritty streets of the not yet gentrified outer reaches of New York City. It has a throw back quality to the gritty crime films of the 70s and 80s, with modern day pimps and prostitutes hustling the streets. The plot unwinds in a logical and honest way that leads the audience to identify with an otherwise moral man who is left with no other choice but to descend into a life of crime. The film is blessed with a great cast, great score and a very well written script. I look forward to more from this director.
Original, action packed drama
Writer-director Bari Kang's Lucky is a well made film with a talented cast. I grew up in the New York/New jersey area, and watching this movie depicted a taste of realness of undocumented life, as well as life for any immigrant caught up in the fight to make a living to support loved ones. If you want to experience drama and action along with an interesting story line, I highly recommend this movie.
Heart-pounding, gritty and real
I was fortunate enough to see Lucky when it premiered at the Urban World Film Festival and was blown away. It exceeded all of my expectations (which were high). The pacing of the film is consistently taut, it's well shot and well acted and I was glued to the screen for the entire ride. Excited for its upcoming release!
Lucky: Gritty & Intense
I had the pleasure of seeing Bari Kang's "Lucky" at the New York City theatrical premiere last week. "Lucky" stands out with a 1970s aesthetic, with many gritty night shots of Kang driving through New York City's streets. The casting is superb, as the film is populated with real character actors, who fully and convincingly embody their characters. Alfredo Diaz is standout in particular, in his role of Fernando, adding a strange and uncomfortable joy to his character's menacing quality, which plays well off of Bari's character, Lucky, who is more restrained, with internal torment. Excited to see what the multi-talented Bari Kang does next!
Starts slow but intense 3rd act - a thriller with heart

The film opens up with a bloody "lucky" foreshadowing what's to come in this naive yet oddly relatable slightly criminal immigrant's unusual yet familiar story. It was nice to see the variety of ethnicities on screen, although I wish there was more development between Ricky and Lucky. You get the sense that Ricky is or was Lucky's protector but I would have like to seen the background a bit more. The film slows down after the first act but it really is a type of calm before the storm. About half way into the 2nd act things get "interesting" Lucky has made some stupid decisions and now he wants to get back to his "normal life" but Fernando (the villain) won't have it. The 3rd act is quite intense and things are fleshed out a bit. I really thought Lucky was gonna end up dead like Carlito in Carlito's Way (reminded me a bit of that film)****Spoiler***** but his actions surprised me and I liked the characters dark development and descent. It's a solid job from newbies. The acting, story and production held up throughout. There is some gore towards the end that made me jump in my seat. It was unexpected and thus effective. On the production front, I like the dark yet colorful tone of the film, although I'm not a big fan of the hand-held camera work, in this case it seems to be fitting with the overall theme of Lucky's disjointed life and circumstances. We are close-up and kinda of following Lucky around and there is a feeling of claustrophobia, which I would imagine illegal people might feel in today's America. Don't wanna get into politics and neither does this film, so if that's what you're expecting it's probably not for you. But definitely give it a go if you wanna go for a gritty ride in NYC with cab driver whose not afraid to take some risks for some "easy money." There is no such thing as easy money.
Good indie from nyc
So I had no plans of seeing this movie except that I happened to be attending a festival at Village East Cinemas and saw that "lucky" was playing with a Q/A and my boyfriend wanted to watch it. The movie is Good. Not Great but solid. The actors did a good job and the story, although familiar, (I'm an immigrant) had an interesting spin on it. It was unapologetic and I appreciated that. This is a real independent film and you can tell the budget must have been tight, which was acknowledged in the Q/A so that much more respect to the filmmakers for pulling it off. After hearing everything they had to do to get this made, you appreciate it that much more. Kudos to the team. The music was great too.
