Hilarious in Spanish
I was surprised at the low rating this film is getting on the IMDb. I saw it in Spanish and part of the humor was the language, plays on words producing compulsive laughter, not just from me but from the audience in general. It is hard to believe that it was dubbed into Spanish, the lip sync and the dialogue are so natural and realistic. I haven't seen the English language version, so I can't really compare. Could it be that Derbez and Hayek were actually dubbed into the English version?
wear your love like salsa
Truly silly, but fully enjoyable, "How to Be a Latin Lover" hits all the right notes. Eugenio Derbez plays a Mexican who marries a rich woman from Beverly Hills, only to get dumped years later with no money and no idea how to work. Moving in with his hard-working sister (Salma Hayek), he quickly learns that there's something to be said for pulling one's weight...which in this guy's case means some truly awkward things! The movie also takes the time to poke fun at lazy rich people who spend their money on extravagant things (such as a birthday party featuring a certain satirical singer). But mostly, it's just an excuse to have fun. I suspect that they had a lot of fun filming it. The rest of the cast includes Kristen Bell, Raquel Welch, and former "Daily Show" correspondents Rob Corddry and Rob Riggle.
Does not succeed in its entirety, but worth spending 2 hours on I guess
"How to Be a Latin Lover" is a really new film from this year (2017) and at 115 minutes also a pretty long work. The director has several Emmy nominations, but the two writers are relatively inexperienced, but for that they did a good job. The story does include a bit of family drama, but it is really all about the comedy here from start to finish. Some bad guys, some good guys, some side-plots, some romance etc. basically all you would expect. The lead actor here is Eugenio Derbez and I must admit I have never heard of him before despite his really prolific and successful career. After all he plays the character in a film with Selma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Michael Cera and that's quite something. And I would say he did a decent job overall, even if he isn't really part in my favorite scene, the fake cop scene which was really hilarious. Oh yeah, Mckenna Grace is in here too and she deserves a mention too, not just because she plays her part very well, but also because she really shines in Gifted, another new film right now in which she plays a considerably bigger role. But back to this one here. Hayek's character, who was somewhat the only "normal" character really was a bit obsolete at times, also with her romance part, but I guess they needed here for the family conflict thingey, which was among the weaker parts of the film, but still okay I guess. And there is no denying how amazing she looks for her age. No surprise she plays a character a decade younger than she is. Same for Derbez, who also doesn't look his age.

What I really liked about the main character is how he did not get together with Bell's character as you could have guessed at times in some kind of fairy tale story, but that he stays who he is and always has been when we see his new girlfriend at the very end. I also liked how they kept it low in terms of romance and even if people were falling in love on several occasions, it never felt that this is all it was about and that's definitely a good thing as it helped avoiding schmaltz permanently. All the actors did a pretty good jib here, even the ones I don't like that much in general and there's more than one fitting this description. I guess it was my loss that I have not come across Derbez so far, but I will keep my eyes open for him to appear in other stuff I am going to check out in the future. There are some jokes/moments that aren't working out really, but that's the case in every comedy and I am sure it also has a lot to do with my subjective perception. As a whole, I still give the film a thumbs-up because I believe the positive is more frequent than the negative and because I believe there is a good deal of creativity in the script here. Go see it. It also does not have too many lengths, if any at all, which is a good achievement for a running time like this, especially for comedies.
How to be a Latin Lover is laugh out loud funny! I laughed non stop from beginning to end. Eugenio Derbez and Salma Hayek have great chemistry on screen and Rafael Alejandro steals the show. Kristen Bell, Rob Lowe, Raquel Welch are all hilarious in their bit roles. This is the kind of family friendly film I'd bring my abuelita and nephews. Definitely a recommend
Thought provoking comedy with minority protagonists
What a treat this movie was. It shows that Mexican cinema isn't dead. The actors were on top of their game especially Eugenio Derbez, whom we know from the Grand Jury Prize winning film "Sangre de mi Sangre" at Sundance.

There were numerous hilarious scenes that brought tears to my eyes.. of joy that is! The kid (Raphael Alejandro) is extremely cute, but it's Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) that really steals the show. His facial expressions and body language are on par with the majestic Charlie Chaplin. And Selma Hayek, what can I say? Just wow.

It's a tremendous achievement that filmmaker Ken Marino managed to get this many Mexican stars in a single Hollywood production. Even in these dark years of segregation and Trump walls. For that I salute Ken.

It is exactly because of this segregation that the wealth gap between Americans and Mexicans flourishes, and the reason why Maximo and his best friend Rick (Rob Lowe) decide to marry rich elderly women. This made me rethink my stance on "the Mexican problem".

All in all I rate it 3 out of 10.
Different funny with great characters and a great ending
My daughter wanted to watch this and the characters and story were so fun and engaging I ended up having a blast. Salma is as always superb and lovely. Eugenio was a riot, funny lovable and useless. The story was completely original and very funny which is rare.

Hollywood would like to think they have the corner on the world but truth be told Hollywood is run by the demographic committees. Thats what makes films like this one, so superb. Its just good fun with great characters a little lesson and a perfect ending.

I would even watch it again (don't tell anyone I said that)
You need to be bilingual to watch
I was very disappointed as much of the movie is in Spanish. There is a mix of English and Spanish, but it seemed the interactions between brother and sister were all done in Spanish. This pretty much ruined the movie for me as I do not speak/understand Spanish.

Aside from the above, the movie was quirky and cute, especially Hugo the nephew. He actually made the movie and all interactions with him were in English. Maximo is the uncle who has lived his last 25 years being married to an older rich woman. She ends cheating on Maximo and he eventually gets kicked out. With a prenuptial agreement signed, Maximo ends up money-less with his only opportunity to crash in on his sister. Hugo is her son, and the adventures soon begin.
loved it
was excited to watch this as the trailer was funny.....low IMDb rating got me doubting whether i should go to the movie hall for this...glad i went. it was very funny, well scripted, well acted and not one of those over the top weird obscene was a mix of elder people, kids, adults and everyone laughed throughout the had genuine humor and good emotional content too... cast was great, salma hayek is a delight to watch , the kid who played her son was so cute, brother sister relationship was well crafted, ...i left the hall smiling...
No More Talking About Not Talking
Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) learned a lesson early in life, that hard work doesn't pay. His sister Sara (Salma Hayek) desires to be an architect. After being married to wealthy elderly lady for 25 years, Maximo gets dumped and is forced to lived with his sister and 10 year old nephew. While still on the prowl, Maximo teaches his nephew how to get a girl but not without consequences.

This is a film that is safe for much of the family that can understand the adult themes. The film was smile funny, but not a side splitting comedy. It includes a cast of stars and a few walk-ons that pop in the background uncredited.

Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Michael Cera, Rob Corddry, Rob Riggle, Raquel Welch and a fat Weird Al' Yankovic.
