Storyline: Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.

Nothing seemed new or fresh.
Like Al Pacino said "Just when I wanted to get out they dragged me back in". That's what happens to the Wahlberg character when he has to get back into smuggling to save his brother-in-law from the bad guys. Don't expect "Scarface". You know things won't go smoothly in this "one more job" action crime thriller.

Don't mistake this movie for a film as it has that drab color digital look that has never seen a film emulsion at any stage of production or distribution.

The movie requires a substantial dose of suspension of disbelief. If you ignore the distractions of Kate Beckinsale being called Kate and a captain too familiar from insurance commercials the movie almost works.

It feels long and container ships move slowly. The Jimmy Hoffa cement ending required far too many steps to fall into place to be taken seriously.
Great Action Film with Many Twists
In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday (Mark Wahlberg) has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father in locked in prison for smuggling.

When his brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi) to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster) and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.

"Contraband" is a great action film with an engaging story that combines action, thriller and drama. The cast is excellent with Mark Wahlberg in the lead role and Giovanni Ribisi is almost unrecognizable in the role of a cruel drug dealer. The plot has many twists with betrayals and the cinematography in New Orleans and Panama is wonderful. The ironic conclusion is a sort of contemporary "The Sting". My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Contrabando" ("Contraband")
The dull tone left me unengaged and the bigger moments left me behind
I quite like Mark Wahlberg and wanted to watch this film despite the so- so reviews it had received. The plot sees Wahlberg's character drawn back into the smuggling game he was once so great at, in order to pay off a debt his brother-in-law owes to a drug-dealer. This involves getting on a boat to Panama and bringing back a package – but even this is not as simple as it seems.

Starting this film as a couple, we made it about 20 minutes in before my partner decided she was bored of it already and didn't want to watch any more. I finished by myself another time and have to admit that I can see why she felt this way because the film has a very slow and rather ordinary pace to it. The plot doesn't help because the first half seems quite ordinary and without too much going on to actually draw you in. There isn't a sense of danger even though there is violence – it felt like acting rather than real within the context of the story. In the middle of the film there is a lot of action and rapid events but these get too big, too quickly and I really didn't buy them – mainly because the previous parts of the film hadn't done much to engage me up till that point. From here the darker tone continues and lots happens on the way to a far too tidy ending, but too much of it just feels too convenient and easy and I wasn't buying into any of it, which is a real shame because delivered better it might have worked.

The direction is far too dark and lacking in energy and tension – lives are on the line but it didn't come across that way. Wahlberg does his usual solid turn but the material isn't there for him and his character doesn't always work well. Foster is better towards the end, more convincing and has something to do, but Ribisi doesn't add much beyond ticking boxes. Beckinsdale is good looking but is limited in what she has to actually do, while Haas, Simmons and some other recognizable faces show up in support.

It is a rather ordinary film overall; it has a drab tone and poor pacing that kept me from getting into it – but then suddenly asks me to go along with bigger moments and rather contrived denouncements, which is hard to do while watching from the outside. Might fill the time as a so- so drama but it is nothing more than average.
I have to admit I quite enjoyed this trip into the shady world of smuggling. Most of the characters were quite believable and there weren't too many plot holes that made the whole thing ridiculous. I also liked that the filmmakers kept the action sequences quite realistic (loved the shoot-out in Panama). As far as performances go, I thought it was pretty much run of the mill stuff for most of them. Kate Beckinsale was a bit underused and Giovanni Ribisi played the loathsome Briggs very well. I guess this 'by the book' thriller was never going to win any prizes, but I did find it entertaining and that's all you can ask of a film of this ilk.

SteelMonster's verdict: RECOMMENDED

My score: 7.4/10.

Nothing new about the story of the movie. Actually I was expected more from Mark Wahlberg.. I couldn't even call this movie action movie, we didn't see so much action in the movie... in my opinion and that is only my opinion because maybe someone else like the movie but I didn't enjoy it and I think it is only deserve 5 out 10..

The movie is about one hour and 48 minutes and for one hour I found the movie is very boring and nothing happen. And the only funny thing in the movie is the last scene in the movie.. there is no logic at all in this scene.. When mark Wahlberg call this guy I couldn't remember his name to tell him that he know the truth and he will be behind him if something happen to his family and then he insist to kill her and Chris came in the last second and stop the cement machine and save her and take her to the hospital after we thought that she was died ... what is that ???

again that is my opinion. if you ask for my advise choose another movie or go and watch it and judge by yourself... Thanks
Unbelievably bad, 10 insane plot lines twisting around.

Mark Wahlberg in this movie has to face insane odds, and beats them all with magical luck and his super smuggler brains. His stupid friend keeps making unbelievably bad decisions, of course. There are some really really evil characters as well, and of course all the evil ones do drugs and the goodies have all gone straight. Luckily, despite everyone seeming to want to ruin Mark's family for no reason whatsoever, the motives being very unclear, Mark manages to save his family and become a multimillionaire and lived happily ever after. The movie also shows us that the bad guys went to prison and were beaten up by the other inmates, of course! This movie just made me angry that it had a decent IMDb score and that it pretended to be somewhat on the scale of possible, so I don't use the phrase 'realistic' because that would be another spectrum. Very frustrating to watch a cast and budget botched so badly.
Contraband- 5 category review
Directing 6/10- Some unique and intriguing shots, but nothing too rememberable Acting 8.5/10- The acting is the category that without a doubt, stole the show. Solid efforts from the entire cast but the film really benefited from tremendous performances from Ribisi and Landry Jones. Screenplay 4/10- The screenplay is fun no doubt and benefits from decent pacing and a few intense action sequences but the film lacks originality, stealing concepts and at times, lines. Visual effects 5/10- The visual effects were average. I can't completely fault a film for not using unnecessary visuals. Sound effects/Music 5/10- The sound effects were fine, nothing misplaced there. The music was again just OK, sometimes the music was great and mixed well with the action going on but in some the haunting/emotional scenes the music didn't make the scene 'better', which is what it should do. Overall, the film is just another forgettable action film. The film has decent enough story (though cliché), with great acting and some fun action sequences that make the film at least worth a viewing.
One of Mark's Best
From the very beginning to the dramatic end, the movie is thrilling. There is not a scene in the movie which drags the story and every bit is to a point. His acting is simple, on point and brilliant as usual and this is one of the best smuggling films i would add to, after Italian job and various others make to a good list. The fact that it brings family, friendship, love, hate, betrayal and the usual bad guy in the film may make it sound all ordinary as most of the films have almost the same characters these days, but the reason i would ask you guys to watch this film is because the touch it has unlike most of them out these days.

I don't think timing is any bit of a problem in this movie and the way in which the scenes unfold is what i think keep you at the edge of your seat through the movie. Anywhoo, A must watch! I loved it personally.
I Contra - banned this movie from my house
This movie wasn't half as good as a Tuesday special full roast chicken from Metro for $6.99. The movies starts off really promising with Marky Mark lifting weights, installing security systems and driving his truck over sidewalks. According to the special features Mark had to sit on four phone books to reach the pedals. Speaking of Special Features the only Special Feature Marky Mark has is that his brother Donnie has been carrying him for years! Anyways, I digress.

Contraband is a movie about a group of smug smugglers who try to smuggle something somewhere, or something. I don't really know to be honest. Giovanni Ribisi is trying to channel Marlon Brando, but unfortunately for him he just sounds like somebody beat his mouth in with a Louisville slugger. They got Ben Foster to be in the movie by lying to him and telling him that this wasn't a Marky Mark film. Then on the last day of shooting surprise! You've been Marked! That's what he calls it when he tricks people to be in his movies, which obviously he has to do. Quick, whats a good Marky Mark movie? You probably said Notting Hill….but guess what?!?! Marky Mark isn't in Notting Hill, you just got Marked!

All in all I would give Contraband one VHS tape out of ten. If Marky Mark wants to keep his career going he is going to need to do a buddy cop movie with brother Donnie very soon and call it Baston Brothers.
"What would you hide to protect your family?"
To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.

It was another "spontaneous movie-weekend" and I decided to go for Contraband, a movie that seems to deliver. I really didn't have anything to get on, only that the trailer made it seem plausible. Sitting down, popcorn ready, movie starting; I seemingly enjoyed this above-average thriller that surely delivers the one and only thing it requires: your entertainment. Let's start on my favorite subject: the directing. What annoyed me the most was this exact thing. The cinematography was horribly messy, and everything was so fast-paced, your going to be tracking back of what happened. Trust me, it's not THAT bad, but it does require some readying beforehand. The acting was decent. We have Mark Waulburg, who I can say is a very great actor. Kate Beckinsale is her usual self, which is always a good thing. Everybody else did a good job, but most notably was the main villain Eirkur, played by Giovanni Ribisi. We've seen the guy in movies before, but either his performance was more so of a background character, or he didn't show his true ability. In Contraband, all feelings are about to reverse. When he talks throughout, he mumbles, you can't understand him, it's a bit creepy. And that's the whole point of a villain. He's supposed to test the hero's strength and ability, and although this isn't some superhero movie, it still does a great job realizing this. He gets the most notable role. Next, we have the action. Although the movie isn't fully geared on action, the movie has it's scenes. Some are intense, some are just shoot-em-up, and some are gritty and violent. I liked the diversity, really, but each time an action scene showed, I knew I had to concentrate hard to see what's to happen. Lastly, I'd like to take note on how horrendous the first half of the film is. I enjoyed the presentation and the way the film builds itself, but some of it was completely pointless. I found myself rethinking of any expectations I had beforehand, and then the second half saves it. Great twist, great action, and a real great story- telling. If it weren't for the Resurrection there, I surely would not have been a happy man. In conclusion, I enjoyed Contraband. Although it wasn't the best movie of 2012, it packed a lot of fun and drama. I like the performances, the action, and the pure awesomeness it consumes. I recommend it! 7/10.
