Storyline: Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.

I really expected more out of this movie.

I like Mark Walberg generally. "Boogie Nights" was wonderful, and I also enjoyed "Happenings".

"Contraband" doesn't match up against these other films.

It's disjointed, choppy, and difficult to keep up with.

If you like Mark, you'll probably enjoy this movie.

Without him it wouldn't be much.

That's starpower for you.

It begins to pick up speed at about 1:20 minutes.

This is probably a watch-it-once-and-forget-about movie, but you might like to watch it once.
Great Action Film with Many Twists
In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday (Mark Wahlberg) has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father in locked in prison for smuggling.

When his brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi) to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster) and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.

"Contraband" is a great action film with an engaging story that combines action, thriller and drama. The cast is excellent with Mark Wahlberg in the lead role and Giovanni Ribisi is almost unrecognizable in the role of a cruel drug dealer. The plot has many twists with betrayals and the cinematography in New Orleans and Panama is wonderful. The ironic conclusion is a sort of contemporary "The Sting". My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Contrabando" ("Contraband")
Good Wahlberg action movie. Strong storytelling after the cliché start.
Contraband starts like "Gone in 60 Seconds", but instead of boosting cars it's about smuggling contraband, and like GI6S it's because of an idiot younger brothers and familial responsibilities that brings an ex-criminal/smuggler out of retirement for that one last job. Chris our smuggler protagonist is deemed the Houdini of smuggling but in reality, he's a general super bad-ass who can talk fast, kick ass and smuggle at superhero levels. We are then treated to the Mark Wahlberg show where it's hard to imagine anything adverse happening to him and we just go along with the ride.

The movie is at its best after it sheds its GI6S intro and moves to the nitty gritty details of smuggling. The movie feels at home at sea where everything is calculated and ordered, but while on land, the movie is always bizarre, violent and out of control. This lends for some really angular storytelling that keeps the movie exciting and interesting.

It's great to see Kate Beckinsdale in the movies again though she plays the wife whose main role is to look great and be in distress, a far cry from her iconic Underworld Selene or from her last movie Whiteout.

On the whole it's a good action movie and if you liked Mark Wahlberg's previous movies like the Italian Job and Shooter, you will also like this.
Ended up liking it much more than I thought at first...
It started out a bit too reminiscent of "Gone in 60 Seconds" for me and I thought I would lose interest. I didn't. It ended up much more exciting than expected and I really enjoyed all the action - even as a female that likes action movies for the most part, but gets bored with the "same old crap".

Giovanni Ribisi is hard to believe at first as "THE tough guy/Bad Ass", but fits the role perfectly as twists come to light. Perhaps his place as a protagonist where there is a young guy in deep trouble that needs rescuing from his brother (in-law, in this case) is what put me so in mind of "Gone in 60 Seconds" at the beginning of this movie.

Lots of twists... some expected, but I'm one of those people that figures it all out pretty easily (and ticks off those watching with me - if I say it out loud), but a couple that were unexpected, too.

Watch - Enjoy - it's worth it!
Been there done that!
"Contraband" is an action movie slash heist thriller that turned out to be a decent movie, not a great one but decent nonetheless. The movie is made so by Mark Whalberg and Ben Foster who play great together on screen and feed-off of each other both as friends and ultimately rivals..

One of the great weaknesses of the movie is its visual style and production value. It borrows quite heavily from directors such as Paul Greengrass, and Michael Mann in particular. Substitute New Orleans with Miami and this could have been Michael Mann's quiet but brilliant and thoroughly underrated movie "Miami Vice" with Collin Farell and Jamie Foxx. "Contraband" does so much borrowing that it borders on plagiarism...if there is such a thing for movies...there were some scenes where I really thought I WAS watching "Miami Vice"...

"Contraband" is one of those movies that have started cropping up at the beginning of January ever since "Taken" proved such a great success at the box office. Now studios populate January with all kinds of action flicks, hopping to duplicate that same success, unfortunately for them, they seem to forget the cardinal rule...regardless of the intent...they must be good movies, which is exactly what "Taken" was! "Contraband" tries hard, and while it is not an epic fail, it only succeeds minimally. If not for Mark Whalberg and Ben Foster, this would be yet another forgettable bore fest...
Not too much going on
Contraband is a movie that only succeeds as a means to spend a session watching a movie, as I find it unimpressive and a bit of a drag at times. Of course if you like the genre you should by no means be deterred by my words and I'm sure you may enjoy it. The story follows an ex-smuggler (Wahlberg) as he tries to make an honest living but ends up back in the game to protect the ones he loves. The leading man is an approachable hero and one you can support, with his main character traits being his courage and boldness. The rest of the supporting characters handle the job well and as for the rest of the movie's elements, I would say they are presented with acceptable quality. Contraband isn't necessarily a movie you have to watch, but it shouldn't be avoided either. In short watch it if you want and you will be mildly entertained. I was.

Rating 6/10
Contraband is Paint by Numbers
Contraband is a paint by numbers action/thriller. It would be easy to pick on everything that this movie wasn't, but can you blame chicken nuggets for being chicken nuggets? With a rookie screenwriter at the helm, the script suffers from a mash-up of cliché's. They start with "One last heist" and end with "If you want to save your family you'll do as you're told". There were many déjà-vu moments of been there and done that.

The star power was strong, but given so very little to work with in the way of character back story. All the characters were two dimensional representations of stereotypes. The locations (New Orleans & Panama) were interesting choices but never really quite fit. While the movie wasn't action packed, it moved at a good pace and kept my interest the whole time. The film work was solid as a whole. There was one particular action sequence that takes place around the halfway mark that was done very well.

If you have a craving that only chicken nuggets will satisfy, then I think you will come away fairly happy. Not a necessity to see on the big screen, but that helps it a little. Leave your thinking cap outside, that's the contraband that will keep you from enjoying this as it was intended.
Disappointing, slow and sometimes boring
Contraband is a mediocre movie that fails to live up to what is presented in the trailers and in the movie's premise. Definitely not one of Mark Wahlbergs's best films by a long shot. The story was not interesting, the action scenes dull and the acting was sub-par.

I never really cared about any of the characters. I can't think of one performance that stood out as being good. Not sure if it was a bad script or just bad acting.

The pace of the movie was really slow. I kept waiting for it move faster, but never did.

I liked Wahlberg in "The Italian Job', but Contraband has a much weaker supporting cast and a poorer storyline.

There are better heist, action movies to see than this one.
Don't Waste Your Time. Piece of crap! We turned it off after 15 minutes.
I love crime movies, and I love the main actors in this film. But when my sons and I sat down to watch it, after 15-20 minutes, once we knew where the whole thing was going - the big problem had they had to solve, so to speak. And not one of us gave a rip...

It was like, "Wait you want me to sit through another hour and a half to find out they accomplish what I couldn't care less about." No thanks.

Should have known to avoid this thing when it said this was the director's first Hollywood film (on IMDb). Hard to believe they got all the actors to sign on, unless they did it somewhat as charity to help New Orleans, where it was filmed. I grew up across the lake from New Orleans, and that wasn't even enough to make me want to sit through the rest of it.
Contraband - A Movie Viewer's Review
Contraband is a pretty good movie. That being said, there are some mistakes in this movie that could have made it a great movie. Through the last half of the movie it just makes all of the scenes and all of the drama into a jumbled up mess. Going into this movie, you will have to know that this is a thriller, and only then will you be truly entertained while watching this.

The story is a strong one with multiple arguments jam packed together into one big dramatic fight. What happens, though, is that there gets to be too many big arguments and they overlap each other and eventually you'll forget one part that happened that was very important and then you'll be watching a next important argument.

There is a violent shootout. It's about five minutes long, but for an R rated movie it's nothing compared to some of the violence in other movies.

I think that the worst problem that was done in this movie was that people expected the wife to be kidnapped and then at the end Chris would have killed the bad guy. No. What happens is that Tim Riggs keeps threatening Chris' family, once to Chris and the rest of the times to his wife, and what really happens is that near the beginning and near the end Chris keeps showing up Tim.

I liked this movie for a thriller but if you're more of an action movie lover, aka die hard, then don't waste your time with this movie because you will end up disappointed.

The last and most important thing I will state is that people who love strong stories will love the drama in this movie. It's all about transporting counterfeit bills from New Orleans to Panama and along the way there are many complications between Chris, Tim, Kate, and Sebastian. Get ready for a wild ride.
